Setting Up a Mini-Office for Kids, and Get Your Work Done

Why do moms work from home? Because we want to be home for our kids, mostly. Which means we sometimes have to work when our children are wanting our attention. I have the perfect get-20-productive-minutes-out-of-them-scheme: pull out their mini-office. Tell your child that not only do you have to work, you have a project for them too. Then pull out a box with their work in it. Here is a list of what we have in our box:

washable markers
free printables, coloring pages

old day timer

Share-a-Sale ad network seems to have a lot of crafty type of advertisers for publishers of blogs, us, to work with. Currently on my crafty personal site I am going to be using them in the scrapbook section. Just to be clear - they have a lot more than just crafty merchants, I was looking for the crafty ones - Check it out… sign ups were easy. Searching out merchants were a bit tedious, but they always are.

Yes, I know it is September, but how far have you gotten on your Christmas list? Me? Not as far as I would like. Respecting Others Intellectual Property on Your Blog

While the information on the internet is free, mostly, it is not available to take. Copyright should protect those who create resources, whether on the internet or elsewhere. Just to be sure we all know what we are allowed to do with others property, here is a summary:

1.) You can link to anything. You are legally allowed to put links in your blogs to anything that is at a link. BUT, it is not always nice to link to things, like images, as opposed to the webpage the link is on.

2.) You may not pull a link, like when you upload an image from another site to a blog. That is a copyright violation.

3.) You may not copy and paste other’s work onto your blog. You may use about three lines of the work as a quote and link to the rest of the piece.

At this point I’d like to say that by respecting the work of other bloggers or webmasters will help them respect yours, but no, that isn’t true. It is true, however, that Google notices and will hinder those that copy other’s work by page rank and adsense TOS.

I know you think I’m kidding, but I am absolutely not! This essential will help you get what you need completed and keep your family happy. How? It’s very simple. You get the sign, make one if you want, and show it to all those you love and who love you so much that they need your attention when you’re blogging. Then you tell them you are out-at-the-office when the sign is hung up on the door. You do not wish to answer the phone, you cannot help them with homework and they will need to learn to wipe their own butts until after the sign comes down.

The more you keep firm on these rules, the better your family will be able to handle your work schedule at home. Of course, there are a few rules for you to live by when the sign is up:

Before you put the sign up, make a list of what you will be getting done while it is up. Touch base with everyone and let them know the sign is going up and approximately when it will come down.
Put the sign up and work – be productive. Get through your list as efficiently as possible.
If you are going to take a break, take the sign down.
When the sign comes down, touch base with your family again.

Blogging Tips: Know Your Blog’s Purpose

What is the reason you have begun blogging? For me it is to make a little money showing people what I know about making a little money on a website or blog. It’s purpose is to do that in a way that is hopefully entertaining and useful to my visitors. This is stated pretty clearly in my Blog’s Mission Statement.

There are three things that happen when you know your blog’s purpose:

You don’t go off on tangents about places you want to see before you die as often as you do when you know what you should be writing about.
You’ll attract the visitors who want to read what you’re writing, instead of distract them from the real message.
You’ll be able to set up the right kind of advertising that will fit your blog like a glove, and therefore make you money.

That’s three pretty good reasons to know the purpose of your blog. Write it out and stick to it!

It’s gone, I deleted it… I deleted them all… ack!

While trying to figure out why I couldn’t find my Word Press API key number so that I could install of a few plug-ins to check out and blog about, I deleted all of my comments, thinking I had only deleted the spammy ones.

For those who have left really cool and informative comments, please feel free to repost, and/or yell at me. I will try and not be so stupid in the future… For those who posted the spammy stuff, the plugin is now working, heh.

As for the Word Press API key number, you need to get a REAL username at Word Press. That means if you installed a Word Press blog from your domain name server, you need to go to wordpress.com and sign up for a username there too. I used the same username and password as for my blog and it synced me right in.

This was a bit confusing, so I hope it helps someone!

Blogging Tips: Submit Your Blog to the Open Directory Project

This is one of the main search engine type directories that your blog will really benefit from if included. It takes some time, as all adds are done by hand(human hand that is). It is also very selective, so be sure your blog has been up and running and is up to par about being a resources on your chosen topic.

You’ll need to dig down the topic lists and submit from your category page. Bookmark that page so that you can check back. Take a look at your competition and fellow webmasters/bloggers in your field while your there.

A side note: Google likes links in this directory, it has been my experience that a link here helps with page rank.

I was going to write up something on using Amazon.com as an affiliate as I am getting some of this coded today but Low and Behold, it’s done! Really, I can’t write this one up any better so I’m just passing on the link:

The only thing i don’t recommend is the Discount Hosting. Sorry, I know others that have had no problem, but I feel you get what you pay for and while I enjoy low cost hosting($6.95 a month with hostican.com) discount hosting often leads to sites that go Down just when google is doing a re-index.
