When interviewing someone in your site's niche via email, you have it much easier than when you ask them questions directly and then are unsure of the answers so your next question ends up flubbed up. It is also easier on the person being interview as they can read and re-read their answers and be sure what they are saying is what they really want to say.
I say that you should take all of the benefits of interviewing via email and be very happy! Here are some tips to make your interview a great one:
- Know your subject. Before you ask your questions you should research your subject and read other interviews of them. This will keep you from asking questions that are redundant or just plain silly.
- Ask open ended questions that can be answered with more than a yes or a no. Ask five to ten questions knowing that you will get longer answers t some rather than others. Motivate your interviewee with your questions. Don't ask things you already know.
- When you receive the interview questions back, read it carefully and clarify any points you do not understand by emailing the interviewee again. After you recent an answer to your clarifications, you are ready to begin writing your interview.
- In your opening paragraph you should express why this interview is beneficial to your users and how this person is important to your niche. Get to the point and then get to the interview. Bold the question you asked and then put the answers. Do not paraphrase your interviewee, but do fix errors in spelling and grammar.
- End your interview with a short paragraph about how much you enjoyed doing the interview and then further resources.
