Should You Write or Blog For Someone Else or Yourself?

Writing for yourself or someone else is a question many moms are facing every day when deciding how to make money online writing. There are opportunities to write for companies and blogs that pay a minimum amount of money. And when you are looking to get paid, any amount works. I've been there. I still write for the New York Times About.com Parenting Teens site. Joining that site back when it was the Mining Company was a turning point in my writing career. I will always be grateful to that company.

The Pros of writing for someone else:

  • You do the work, you get paid.
  • They may not pay you what your work is worth.

The Cons of writing for someone else:

  • You have to write what they want you to write.
  • You have deadlines.
  • You can't make any more money than what they offer.

Starting your own blog or website is freeing in the fact that you are in control and it is debilitating in the fact that you are in control. You will have to do all of the administrative services and you will need the time it takes for your blog or website to grow, evolve and begin to make money that you can count on.

The Pros of writing for yourself:

  • No deadlines.
  • You write about your own topics and choose your content.
  • A sense of total accomplishment when you succeed.

The Cons of writing for yourself:

  • You have to deal with the administrative end of your site or blog.
  • You have to deal with the advertising end of your site or blog.
  • Keeping yourself motivated while your blog is building on content and visitors can be daunting.
  • Takes time, a lot of time.

Then there is always the other option: Do both!
